While we do some background work on the mechanics of some 3d model compression, here’s a bugfix release to fix a few problems, including infinite redirection in single-user mode, and some fixes for running non-Postgres databases.

Release v0.91.0
This release is all about safety; we’ve added features for reporting abusive or illegal content, both for local users and across the Fediverse, and for blocking federation to or from particular domains. Federation is still at a very basic level, but we really wanted to get at least some basic safety features in early; it’s important stuff! Moderators can view and resolve submitted reports in the new settings area introduced in the last release, and can also manage local accounts in a new user management UI.

This release focuses on site administration and user management, with a redesign of the site settings area and a new user management section for moderators/admins. You can now also require moderator approval for new accounts, so you can let people sign themselves up, but also check that you want to let them in before they can access everything.

Release v0.89.0
Mostly behind-the-scenes changes and bugfixes this time round; better 3MF conversion behaviour, custom database port support, and fixes for sites that aren’t running at the root of their domain. There’s also been a big reorganisation of the settings; user-specific settings are now in the same place as password and email, whereas the old settings page is now just for site-wide admin settings.

Release v0.88.0
This release was just going to be bugfixes, but then we added support for a load of new file formats, particularly ones used for stuff like game development or higher-end graphics work. So, you can now index Collada (DAE), FBX, IGES, DXF, 3DS/MAX, Maya, Modo, Sketchup and even more. Take a look at the supported formats page on the website for the full list!

This release adds the ability to resolve problems in bulk; so if you have a lot of missing files, or empty folders, now you can remove them all in one go! There are also new application and database performance dashboards, so you can see how your instance is performing, as well as the usual collection of bug fixes.

Release v0.86.0
This release adds another long-requested feature, a big download button for an entire model! No, I’m not sure how it took this long either. But, there’s not just one download button - there are options! You can download just the supported files, just the unsupported, or just one particular file type!

You can also choose how you want to display sensitive items; you can show them normally, blur them in the lists, or you can hide them completely!

We’re working on ActivityPub interoperability with platforms like Mastodon, and there’s a lot of work under the hood to get us there. You can grant per-item viewing, editing, or owner permissions, and you can grant them to all local users, individual users, or the general public so your stuff can be viewed without an account. By default, new and existing content will be available to view by all local users, which is the same as previous versions. But, admins can change that default in settings to make new items private instead.

Release v0.74.0
This release sees quite a milestone; it’s the first time we’ve removed a feature! You used to be able to choose how unrelated tags were shown in the cloud; either in a faded colour, or hidden completely and just shown as a count. In the process of fixing a performance problem with really big libraries, we decided that flexibility wasn’t worth it for the amount of computation it required, so it’s gone away.

Over the last six months, Manyfold has been the beneficiary of open source funding from the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet programme, via NLNet. We’ve also applied for another round to keep that success going.

Release v0.70.0
This releases brings BIG changes to the upload process. Firstly, file upload progress is shown as it happens, so you can see what’s going on; then, the extraction of zip files happens in the background, so you can carry on using Manyfold while it happens. Models are created straight away, without the need for a full scan, so the “scan after upload” button has gone away. And finally, perhaps our single most popular feature request - you can now upload individual files as new models! So, no need to zip up a single STL any more.

Week 21, and it was time to bite off the next big bit of work. Improvements to uploading are the most popular requested features at the moment, and in order to do that, I wanted to make some underlying improvements to the way the files are managed. One big driver for this is that I wanted to be able to support cloud storage (like Amazon S3), so that if you’re running a shared instance, you don’t need a real attached disk, and can easily expand storage as required.

This release is all about improving accessibility after a recent audit. No new features as such, but if you’re a screen reader or keyboard user you should find the site much easier to use. We now have skip links for large content blocks, proper tab ordering, better labels for links and buttons, and much more. We now use shape as well as colour to differentiate problem severity icons, which should help users with reduced colour vision.
